Maia Sandu identifies judicial reform as key to Moldova's EU accession

President Maia Sandu stated at the Justice Reform and Anti-Corruption Forum that establishing the rule of law remains one of the most difficult tasks in Moldova's process of joining the European Union. While public trust in the judiciary is increasing, Sandu noted that reforms are progressing more slowly than citizens and authorities desire.

Key challenges identified include a high volume of pending cases and significant staff vacancies within the judicial system. Sandu emphasized the need to focus on training a new generation of judges and prosecutors to alleviate the workload on existing personnel.

EU Ambassador Iwona Piorko highlighted that judicial reform and anti-corruption efforts are essential to Moldova's European path, stressing the importance of completing external evaluations of judges and prosecutors in a consistent and credible manner.
