Maica García to sue Astralpool Sabadell over maternity contract dispute

Olympic and world champion water polo player Maica García has announced legal action against Astralpool Sabadell following the club's decision not to renew her contract after her maternity leave.

García, who spent 32 years with the club, claims the decision violates labor protections for professional athletes. She cited Article 6 bis of Royal Decree 1006/1985, as incorporated by Organic Law 2/2024, which she asserts mandates a contract extension for athletes who give birth during a natural season.

The athlete expressed deep emotional distress and anxiety regarding the situation, noting that she was informed of her dismissal by human resources only after her contract had expired. Despite the dispute, García intends to continue her professional career and aims to compete in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. She has since signed with CN Sant Andreu.
