Maiko Miyasaka relocates to Hiroo to pursue surfing and painting

Professional surfer and painter Maiko Miyasaka, known by her artist name ‘maikos museum’, has relocated to Hiroo, Hokkaido. Miyasaka, a graduate of Hiroo High School, moved to the town in June to pursue both her surfing and artistic careers simultaneously.

She has established a base at the Funbe Coast, noting that the waves are stable and reminiscent of Medewi in Bali. Miyasaka has converted a traditional house into an atelier and home, utilizing DIY methods to customize the space. In addition to competing in domestic and international surfing competitions, she is organizing a ‘girls surf camp’ from September 18–20 to promote the charms of Hiroo through surfing lessons and art.

As an artist, Miyasaka focuses on themes of ‘liveliness’ in her work. Her future goals include holding exhibitions in New York and Paris, as well as hosting an exhibition in Hiroo as a way to give back to the community that supported her.
