Mail handling and postage guidelines in Germany

Practical guidance has been provided regarding mail handling and postage in Germany. For recycling, envelopes with plastic windows can be disposed of in the paper recycling bin. During the recycling process, the paper is turned into a pulp, allowing the small plastic windows to be separated and removed. While these windows are often too small for reuse and are typically incinerated, separating the plastic for the yellow bin is considered optimal for waste management.

Regarding postage, sending mail without sufficient stamps does not necessarily result in the loss of the item. Deutsche Post may return the letter to the sender if an address is provided, or in some cases, charge the missing postage to allow delivery. Currently, the standard domestic letter rate in Germany is 0.95 Euro, though Deutsche Post has indicated that significant postage increases are expected in 2027 due to rising personnel and transport costs.
