Main Roads WA implements in-house real-time traffic platform
Main Roads Western Australia has implemented a home-grown traffic operations platform called the Real Time Operating Platform (RTOP). The system unifies data from approximately 30 separate sources, including intelligent transport systems, CCTV, electronic signage, and congestion monitoring tools, into a single operational interface.
Rather than purchasing a proprietary system, the agency chose an internally led development model to maintain control over intellectual property and allow for customization. Delivered via the AWS cloud platform, RTOP aims to reduce complexity for operators and provide faster, more consistent monitoring of the state's road network.
In its first year of operation, the platform has already improved incident detection and notification speeds. Moving forward, the agency plans to integrate predictive analysis and artificial intelligence into the platform through 2026 and beyond.
