Main street closures for culvert replacements in Kingsbridge, UK and Caribou, US

In Kingsbridge, Devon, a new 45‑metre underground culvert has been installed beneath Fore Street, allowing water from the stream to flow safely. The temporary staff cabin used to monitor water pumps has been removed and the pumps were switched off on 27 July. Although the culvert work is complete, the road remains closed while further stages are carried out, with free parking offered in town car parks to encourage visitors.

In Caribou, Maine, the Main Street bridge over Prestile Brook will stay closed from July 20 until about 20 November while a large concrete arch culvert is built to replace the existing structure. The project includes a federally funded wildlife crossing to allow moose, deer and other large animals to pass beneath Route 164, and improves fish passage. The contract, awarded to McGillan Construction, totals $4.76 million, with an additional $9.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Both towns are undertaking costly, multi‑month infrastructure projects to replace aging culverts, improve safety for wildlife and maintain traffic flow.
