Mainda Simataa retires from Zambian politics citing safety concerns

Mainda Simataa, a former Kamwala Ward Councillor and recent independent candidate for the Kabwata parliamentary seat, has announced his immediate retirement from active Zambian politics.

Simataa stated that his decision was not prompted by his recent electoral loss, but rather by concerns for his personal safety and his family. He described the current political climate in Zambia as “too toxic, too intolerant, and even dangerous” for politicians.

Previously a member of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), Simataa resigned from the party in May 2026, citing undemocratic laws. During his independent campaign, he alleged that the UPND had attempted to bribe and threaten him to withdraw from the race.
