Maine Catholic diocese reaches seven-figure settlement with abuse survivors

More than 100 survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Maine have reached a seven-figure settlement with the Roman Catholic Bishop of Maine. The settlement process is nearing completion as payments begin.

The legal action follows a decision by Maine’s highest court to strike down a state law that had retroactively removed the statute of limitations for sexual abuse lawsuits. Attorney Michael Bigos stated that the settlement provides compensation for survivors who waited decades for change.

Bishop James Ruggieri issued a statement noting that while some cases lacked legal standing to continue, the financial settlement is intended to acknowledge the seriousness and lasting impact of the reported abuse. The Bishop clarified that no funds from the church’s Catholic Appeal will be used for the settlement.
