Maine Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner Criticized for Offensive Online Posts

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate seat from Maine, has drawn renewed criticism after a series of controversial online remarks were made public. Archived Reddit posts show Platner describing explicit graffiti in portable toilets, recounting a 2017 incident where he claimed to have “jerked off” in a field restroom, and praising the image of a penis in a toilet as "beautiful." He also mocked a wounded U.S. soldier, writing, “Dumb motherfucker didn’t deserve to live,” in response to a video of the soldier being shot by the Taliban.

Further posts reveal Platner bragging about a former tax loophole that let military contractors avoid U.S. income tax by spending overseas time, including “banging hookers in Thailand.” He later covered a Nazi‑linked tattoo he obtained two decades ago, saying he was unaware of its symbolism. The revelations have intensified scrutiny of his candidacy ahead of the November election.
