Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, withdrew from the race after a former girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, accused him of forcing non‑consensual sex in 2021. Platner denied the allegation, calling it “false.” Senior Democrats—including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and DSCC chair Kirsten Gillibrand—issued statements demanding his immediate exit, saying the seat is critical for the party’s effort to flip the Senate.

In an 11‑minute video posted to X, Platner announced, “We are suspending our campaign operations,” and said he would not file paperwork to withdraw until a replacement is chosen through an “open, transparent and democratic” process. State law requires a withdrawal by July 13 for a new candidate to appear on the ballot, and the Maine Democratic Party must name a successor by July 27. Potential replacements being discussed include former state Senate president Troy Jackson, public‑health director Nirav Shah and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows.

The race is viewed as a must‑win for Democrats seeking to gain control of the Senate, pitting Platner’s former opponent, incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins, against an as‑yet‑undecided Democratic challenger.
