Maine driving laws restrict left-lane use on I-95

In Maine, drivers on limited-access highways with speed limits of 65 mph or higher are legally required to stay in the right-hand lane during ordinary operation. While adjacent lanes may be used for overtaking and passing other vehicles, drivers must return to the right-hand lane at the earliest opportunity.

Failure to comply with these regulations, such as ‘camping’ in the left lane without actively passing, can result in a $152 ticket. These rules do not apply to authorized emergency vehicles or those directed by law enforcement or highway maintenance crews.
