Maine Golf debuts new statewide high school player rankings
Maine Golf has introduced a new statewide high school golf ranking system this fall to provide a more accurate comparison of players across different courses and conditions. Developed by Maine Golf executive director Brian Bickford and information technology student Alex Grant, the system aims to quantify player performance by incorporating scores, course slope, and course ratings.
By accounting for the difficulty of a course, the rankings allow for a more nuanced evaluation than simple score comparisons. For example, a higher-quality round on a more challenging course is weighted more heavily than an even-par round on an easier course.
Lincoln Academy junior Colin Mitchell utilized the new rankings as motivation, winning the Class B individual state title at Natanis Golf Club after being ranked sixth in Class B and sixteenth in the state.
