Maine housing affordability remains a challenge as new senior complex opens

Maine is facing significant housing affordability challenges, with a household needing to earn over $60,000 annually to afford a two-bedroom apartment at the statewide fair market rate. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the threshold is approximately $67,224 based on a monthly fair market rent of $1,681. In the Portland area, the required income rises to about $85,200.

In response to the ongoing shortage of affordable options, Equality Commons has opened in downtown Portland. This five-story development provides 54 income-restricted apartments designed to offer an LGBTQ+-affirming community for residents aged 55 and older. While the building is not restricted to LGBTQ+ residents, all occupants must sign a non-discrimination pledge.

The complex includes various unit sizes, from efficiency apartments to two-bedroom units, and features 19 accessible apartments to accommodate mobility limitations. The development also includes community spaces, laundry facilities, and infrastructure designed to support telehealth services.
