Maine implements automatic electric bill discounts for low-income residents
Maine Governor Janet Mills has announced that thousands of low-income residents will receive automatic discounts on their monthly electric bills through the state’s Low Income Assistance Program. The initiative aims to increase participation by using data from programs like SNAP and MaineCare to automatically enroll eligible households.
Eligible customers, defined as those with household incomes at or below 150% of federal poverty guidelines, could see significant reductions. Central Maine Power customers may receive discounts between 25% and 81%, while Versant customers could see between 17% and 83% off. The program is supported by approximately $40 million in funding, a notable increase from previous years, and will apply discounts directly to monthly bills rather than providing lump-sum payments.
In a separate effort to address rising energy costs, Governor Mills has called on Congress to increase funding for heating assistance. She cited a sharp rise in heating oil prices, which have increased nearly 80% compared to last year, as a major concern for Maine’s vulnerable populations. The Governor emphasized that Maine’s rural landscape and older housing stock make residents particularly susceptible to fuel price volatility.
