Maine Launches Statewide Text-to-911 Service

The Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) announced that text‑to‑911 is now available across the state, accompanied by a statewide awareness campaign. The service works on standard SMS‑capable wireless phones with an active texting plan and allows users to send a text to 911 when calling is unsafe or impossible.

Text messages should include a clear description of the emergency, exact location, and whether police, fire or EMS is needed. MPUC Director Dustin Smiley emphasized that calling remains the fastest method, but texting can help people who are deaf or hard of hearing, in active‑shooter situations, or with weak cellular service. Drivers are advised to pull over before texting, and the service does not support internet‑based apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger.
