Maine Legalizes Online Casinos, Louisiana Bans Sweepstake Sites in 2026

In January 2026 Maine enacted LD 1164, authorizing the state's federally recognized Wabanaki Nations to obtain licenses and operate internet casino gaming, including casino‑style games. The law passed without Governor Janet Mills' signature.

Meanwhile, Louisiana lawmakers approved HB 883, which bans sweepstakes‑style online gambling platforms. The ban takes effect on August 1, 2026, and raises the maximum fine for illegal operations from $20,000 to $100,000, while keeping the maximum prison term at five years.

These moves occur as online gambling continues to expand across the United States. New Jersey, which legalized online casinos in 2013, and Pennsylvania, with more than 20 licensed platforms, remain the leading markets, setting a benchmark for other states considering similar legislation.
