Maine men's ice hockey defeats Holy Cross in season opener
The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team opened its 50th season with a 4-1 victory against Holy Cross. The Black Bears secured an early advantage in the first period, fueled by two power-play goals from Tanner Klimpke during a five-minute man-advantage following a major penalty assessed to Holy Cross.
Brock James added an insurance goal in the third period, and captain Owen Fowler scored an empty-net goal to finalize the score. Maine goaltender Albin Boija recorded 18 saves to earn the win.
Holy Cross managed a single goal when Matt Kursonis scored a shorthanded goal in the second period. Holy Cross goaltender Danick Leroux made 26 saves in the loss. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday night at the DCU Center in Worcester.
