Maine political debate erupts over Israel genocide allegations

A debate has emerged regarding the use of the term ‘genocide’ to describe Israeli actions in Gaza, specifically involving political commentary in Maine. Lawrence Gardner argued in an op-ed that accusing Israel of genocide is ‘Hamas propaganda’ and a form of antisemitism, criticizing Maine Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Troy Jackson for using the label.

In response, critics point to findings from various international bodies. The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory stated that Israeli authorities committed four of the five genocidal acts defined by the 1948 Convention. Approximately 50 organizations, including the International Court of Justice, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, have investigated and brought such charges.

Further arguments suggest that protesting Israeli policy is not inherently antisemitic. Reference was made to reports regarding Israeli Heritage Ministry head Amichay Eliyahu, who reportedly stated that Israel had no duty to alleviate hunger in Gaza and expressed intentions regarding the territory's population.
