The ranking was determined using five major categories: Affordability, Economy, Quality of Life, Education & Health, and Safety, which were further divided into 51 subcategories. Maine performed strongest in Education & Health, where it placed 11th. It also saw respectable rankings in Safety (14th) and Economy (18th).

However, the state saw lower placements in Quality of Life (25th) and Affordability (34th). In the overall national rankings, Idaho took the top spot, while New Mexico was identified as the worst state to live in.
