Maine real estate sees $1 house sale by Bath Iron Works as median home prices nearly double

Bath Iron Works announced that the historic Deering House at 606 Washington Street in Bath, Maine, will be sold for $1 provided the buyer relocates the building by November 2027 and assumes all costs and risks. The 1900‑built house sits on a site slated for a new office building for the Navy’s shipbuilding supervisor, and two additional BIW‑owned structures are also offered under the same condition.

A fact‑check of recent claims about Maine’s housing market shows that the median price for existing single‑family homes rose about 92% from $227,500 in June 2018 to $436,000 in June 2026, not the 112% sometimes reported. This increase outpaced the national median rise of roughly 60% over the same period and is attributed to strong demand, limited inventory, and pandemic‑driven remote‑work trends.
