Maine regulators select CMP and Clearway Energy for renewable projects

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has selected preferred bidders for the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program. This initiative aims to connect wind generation in northern Maine to the New England power grid, following previous failed attempts such as the King Pine Wind and LS Power projects.

Central Maine Power (CMP), owned by Avangrid, Inc., was chosen for the transmission component. CMP’s proposal involves a 1,200-megawatt transmission line running from Pittsfield to Haynesville. Regulators noted that CMP’s plan is advantageous because it utilizes existing transmission corridors and has secured nearly all necessary rights of way.

Additionally, the commission selected Clearway Energy LLC to enter contract negotiations for an 800-megawatt onshore wind generation project. The selection of Clearway was based on cost-effectiveness and potential benefits for Maine ratepayers. The wind project is contingent upon the progression of the transmission line, with approximately 600 megawatts slated for grid connection.
