Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner drops out after Nazi tattoo and rape allegation emerge

Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Maine, withdrew his campaign after two separate scandals gained national attention. Investigations revealed that Platner has a Totenkopf tattoo – a Nazi‑era skull-and‑crossbones design – that he kept for 18 years, covering it only later with a Celtic knot. The tattoo was first reported in October, and the revelation prompted criticism from Democratic leaders who had previously endorsed him, including Senators Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer and Sheldon Whitehouse.

In addition, Platner faces a sexual‑assault allegation from former girlfriend Jenny Racicot, who says he raped her in 2021 while intoxicated. Following the accusation, many prominent Democrats withdrew their support and Platner suspended his Senate bid. The controversy was amplified when comedian Adam Carolla made dismissive remarks about the allegation on his podcast, saying, “Most every guy I know did what he’s being accused of… it’s not really rape because we sleep in the same bed,” sparking widespread outrage online.
