Maine Senate race focuses on immigration and ICE policy

Immigration policy has become a central issue in the Maine U.S. Senate race between incumbent Senator Susan Collins and former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson. The debate follows a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the Portland and Lewiston areas earlier this year under ‘Operation Catch of the Day’. The operation, intended to detain criminals, resulted in the arrest of over 200 individuals, including some without criminal records or those in the legal asylum process.

Tensions escalated following the fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national, by an ICE agent near Biddeford. The candidates hold differing views on the agency; Senator Collins stated she requested the administration to scale back the specific operation in Maine, while Jackson and Collins maintain distinct positions on the necessity and conduct of federal immigration enforcement.
