Maine tribal school district faces scrutiny over reported test score improvements

Reza Namin, leader of the Maine Indian Education school district since 2021, has publicized significant improvements in test scores and chronic absenteeism rates. Namin has described the district as a “documented model worthy of national attention,” using data from optional winter assessments to highlight progress, such as a rise in mathematics proficiency at the Indian Island School.

However, these claims have been scrutinized because the winter assessments are not measured against state expectations or benchmarks. When evaluated using the state’s spring testing standards—the primary metric for math, reading, and science proficiency—performance at the Indian Island School has shown a decline. The district operates under the dual jurisdiction of the state and the federal Bureau of Indian Education.
