Maine utilizes smart technology to support aging residents
Maine is increasingly turning to assistive technology to support its aging population. With the state projecting nearly 75,000 additional residents aged 65 and older by 2032, programs like Lifelong Maine are working to help seniors age in place.
Lifelong Maine has distributed 606 smart speakers, specifically Amazon Echo Dots, to residents across the state, from York to Caribou. These devices allow seniors to play music, call family members, and control smart lightbulbs, which can reduce physical risks like trips to light switches. Within two months of distribution, 72% of recipients reported feeling comfortable using the technology.
The initiative addresses challenges such as rural isolation, caregiver burnout, and workforce shortages. According to a 2024 AARP survey, 88% of older adults express a desire to live and age in their own homes.
