The rankings highlight a diverse mix of sectors, with healthcare firms leading the pack, followed by major retailers, defense contractors, colleges and banking institutions. National brands such as Walmart, TD Bank and Hannaford appear alongside long‑standing Maine companies including Bath Iron Works and L.L.Bean. The data underscores Maine’s relatively small population—just over 1.38 million residents—yet its capacity to host sizeable private workforces across a range of industries.
