Mainland Greece emerges as affordable destination for 2026 family vacations

Rising costs for accommodation and ferry travel are driving Greek families toward mainland coastal destinations for their summer vacations. Due to the high expenses associated with popular island destinations, many travelers are seeking more affordable alternatives that offer better value for money and easier road access.

Research into short-term rental availability for August 17–22, 2026, identifies more than 60 coastal destinations in mainland Greece where a family of four can find competitive accommodation rates for a five-night stay. Key factors influencing this shift include the ability to travel via private vehicle, the avoidance of ferry ticket costs, and the availability of larger properties with a better quality-to-price ratio. This trend is gradually reshaping the domestic tourism landscape as smaller coastal areas gain momentum by offering organized infrastructure and quality services at lower prices.
