Maintenance risks during autumn in Germany
Experts are warning of potential property damage caused by seasonal autumn conditions in Germany.
Homeowners are advised to regularly empty rain barrels to prevent overflows. When rain barrels located near house walls overflow, the resulting soil moisture can lead to foundation damage, including ground softening, settlement, or cracks in masonry. Such issues can subsequently cause mold growth in basements and peeling plaster. Additionally, emptying barrels during dry periods can help relieve sewage systems and support groundwater recharge.
Vehicle owners also face risks from fallen leaves. Debris accumulating in gutters, engine bay channels, or door seals can trap moisture, leading to fogged windows, damp carpets, or mold inside the vehicle. Furthermore, wet leaves collecting on door hinges, wheel arches, or underbodies can cause rust due to organic acids. Leaves resting on car paint may also cause staining or discoloration as tannins attack the clear coat.
