Mainz 05 players express frustration over VAR decision in loss to Leverkusen
Mainz 05 players and staff have expressed significant frustration following a 3-4 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, centered on a controversial goal by Jarell Quansah. The Mainz squad contends that the goal should have been disallowed due to a clear handball by Patrik Schick prior to the assist.
Despite video evidence appearing to show the ball striking Schick's hand, referee Max Burda and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) upheld the goal, ruling that no punishable handball had occurred. Defender Stefan Posch criticized the decision, stating it was a decisive moment that forced Mainz to change their tactical approach. Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert also described the situation as feeling “unfair.”
The Video Assistant Referee system has been a permanent fixture in the Bundesliga since the 2017/18 season, following a testing phase in 2016/17. The system is designed to assist referees in reviewing clear and obvious errors regarding goals, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity.
