Mainz faces projected budget deficit of over 245 million euros by 2027

The city of Mainz is facing a significant increase in its projected budget deficit, which is expected to exceed 245 million euros by 2027. This represents a sharp rise from the 177 million euro deficit projected for 2026, an increase of nearly 39 percent.

Finance Director Daniel Köbler identified rising social expenditures and statutory mandatory tasks as the primary drivers of the deficit. These costs include child and youth welfare, integration assistance, and nursing care.

The municipal supervisory authority, ADD, has already imposed restrictions on the city's financial flexibility. For 2026, the authority approved only 75 million euros of the requested 223 million euros in investment loans and capped liquidity loans at 466 million euros. The ADD has expressed concerns regarding the city's long-term financial sustainability, although it does not currently anticipate over-indebtedness due to existing equity.
