The "0‑Euro‑Samstag" programme, introduced in 2024, allowed Budenheim residents to travel free on lines 68 and 80 to Mainz on the first Saturday of each month. The municipality funded the scheme with a total of roughly €9,200 for 2024‑2026.

The offer was limited to the Mainz city area, Budenheim, Wackernheim and Zornheim and ended for Budenheim after July 2026, with only a one‑month extension granted. Officials failed to communicate the change and the proposed digital ticket via the FAIRTQ app would exclude passengers without smartphones.

In Trier, local politicians are debating a similar free‑Saturday bus initiative. Supporters point to Mainz’s reported 15‑27 % rise in ridership and higher retail sales on free‑Saturday days, while critics warn about the financial burden on the Verkehrsverbund Region Trier and the need for the city to cover any revenue shortfall.
