Mainz Oktoberfest faces cancellation over tent permit issues
The planned 2026 Oktoberfest in Mainz faces potential cancellation due to safety and permit issues regarding its main festival tent. Building Department head Ludwig Holle stated that the tent is currently “not permissible” for use because it lacks a valid building permit, which expired in 2017.
Authorities cited concerns regarding structural stability and fire protection. The operator, Mainzer Messe Gesellschaft, has reportedly failed to submit the necessary documentation and expert reports required for a final assessment. The city has issued an ultimatum, granting until next Friday for the submission of required papers; failure to comply could result in the cancellation of the event, which typically attracts between 40,000 and 60,000 visitors.
