Mainz Oktoberfest organizers seek to reverse tent ban

The organizers of the Mainz Oktoberfest and the hospitality association Dehoga are attempting to prevent the cancellation of this year’s event by presenting new documentation regarding the festival tent.

The city of Mainz had previously prohibited the use of the tent due to missing documentation, a decision that was upheld by the Mainz Administrative Court after an emergency application was rejected. The legal dispute centers on whether the structure qualifies as a ‘temporary structure’ (fliegender Bau), which requires fewer permits, or a permanent assembly venue requiring formal building applications.

Dehoga President Gereon Haumann stated that newly submitted expert reports confirm the tent meets all requirements for structural stability and fire protection. The organizers noted that the change in tent configuration occurred after a third-party provider canceled, necessitating the use of their own equipment.
