Mainz Swan Rescued from Fishing Hook on the Rhine

On 2 August 2026 a swan was found on the Rhine near the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz with a fishing hook, bait and line tangled in its beak. Passersby alerted the Mainz fire department, which launched a rescue operation using a fire‑boat and divers. A nearby German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) rescue boat joined the effort, allowing the crew to capture the bird and remove the hook. Spectators watching from the riverbank cheered, and after the hook was removed the swan was released back into the water.

The incident drew a crowd of Sunday walkers who applauded the successful rescue, highlighting community concern for wildlife welfare.
