Mainz-Wiesbaden cycling project completes bridge traffic study
The “Brückenschlag Mainz-Wiesbaden” project has successfully concluded its systematic collection and analysis of bicycle traffic data across three Rhine bridges: the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, Kaiserbrücke, and Schiersteiner Brücke. Conducted between May 31 and September 30, 2026, the study provides the first comprehensive data on how and when cyclists use these crossings.
Initiated by the creative agency Scholz & Volkmer with support from both cities, the project was part of the “World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026” initiative. The goal is to strengthen the cycling connection between the two state capitals and establish a planning foundation for a planned high-speed bicycle connection between Wiesbaden and Mainz.
Data was gathered using temporary mobile counting devices and the “DB Rad+” app, which allowed participants to track their trips through a “Brückenschlag-Challenge.” Maral Koohestanian, Department Head for Digital Transformation, noted that the project demonstrates how digital solutions can involve citizens in urban design, creating a knowledge base to help Wiesbaden develop its cycling infrastructure and make sustainable mobility decisions.
