Maiolo clan drug trafficking investigation concludes in Italy
The District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of Catanzaro has concluded the “Aquarium” investigation, targeting a large-scale drug trafficking network operated by the Maiolo clan of Acquaro. The investigation, conducted with the Guardia di Finanza, reveals a criminal structure linked to the ‘ndrangheta’s Ariola local branch.
Authorities allege the organization has been active since at least 2015, specializing in the import, transport, and sale of large quantities of marijuana, cocaine, and hashish. The group utilized sophisticated encrypted communication tools to evade law enforcement. While rooted in Calabria, the network maintained logistical bases and distribution chains in regions including Lazio, Piedmont, and Abruzzo.
Investigators have identified Angelo Maiolo as the leader, promoter, and financier of the association. A total of 16 individuals are under investigation for crimes including mafia-style criminal association and drug trafficking. The suspects include various members of the Maiolo family and associates with residences spanning multiple Italian provinces.
