Maipú establishes new animal protection and pet ownership ordinance

The Maipú Municipal Council has approved a new Responsible Pet Ownership and Animal Protection Ordinance. The regulation establishes a system of municipal sanctions for behaviors that harm animal welfare, including abandonment in public spaces, cruelty, incitement to aggression, and the organization of animal fights or races.

Fines for violations range from 1 to 5 UTM, currently valued between $71,721 and $358,605. The ordinance also provides tools for public health and population control, such as mass vaccination and sterilization programs, as well as the TNR (trap-neuter-return) method for managing feral cat colonies. Additionally, the law reinforces the requirement for pets to be identified via microchip and registered in the National Pet Registry.
