Maiquetía International Airport resumes flights via temporary terminals
Maiquetía International Airport is resuming commercial operations on September 1 following damage caused by earthquakes in late June. To facilitate the return of flights, the Maiquetía International Airport Institute (IAIM) has established temporary terminals consisting of modular metal structures. These facilities have a total capacity of 2,168 people, including dedicated areas for international and domestic arrivals and departures.
Several major airlines are returning to the terminal. Air Europa will resume five weekly flights starting September 1, while Iberia will restart with three weekly frequencies on September 3. Plus Ultra is scheduled to return on September 8. Copa Airlines is also resuming operations, aiming for 29 weekly frequencies in September. Other carriers, including Avianca, LATAM Airlines Colombia, and Laser Airlines, have announced or implemented route reactivations.
Transport Minister Francisco Garcés stated that the goal is to recover 45% of the airport's national capacity this year. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights. Due to the temporary nature of the facilities, travelers may be transported to the runway via buses.
