Maiquetía International Airport to resume operations via temporary terminals
The Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, Venezuela, is scheduled to resume commercial operations on September 1, 2026, using temporary modular terminals. This follows the suspension of flights on June 24, 2026, caused by two major earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, which resulted in over 6,500 deaths and significant structural damage to the main terminal.
The temporary infrastructure will include two departure and two arrival terminals. The international departure area will span 4,300 square meters with a capacity for 780 passengers, while the national area will cover 3,000 square meters for 480 passengers. These facilities will offer amenities such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, medical services, and charging stations. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines to confirm rescheduled itineraries.
In Colombia, Matecaña International Airport in Pereira has also begun a gradual reopening process following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10. The airport is currently operating with approximately 18 daily flights under restricted conditions, including passenger access limited to the first floor and entry through the Control Tower sector.
