Maison de l'Amérique latine faces relocation risk in Paris

The Maison de l'Amérique latine (MAL) celebrated its 80th anniversary in Paris while facing significant uncertainty regarding its future. The institution, which promotes cultural and diplomatic ties between France and Latin American and Caribbean nations, has occupied its current headquarters since 1965.

The Banque de France has put the two 18th-century mansions located on Boulevard Saint-Germain up for sale, valuing the property at 100 million euros. Because the sale process does not require a buyer to maintain the MAL's presence at the site, the institution faces the risk of losing its historic home.

In response, several Latin American embassies have launched a petition to prevent the displacement of the center, which serves as a vital resource for smaller diplomatic missions. The petition has gathered over 25,000 signatures, including support from figures such as former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet. MAL President Jean-Marc Laforêt stated that the institution intends to remain at its current location to preserve its established network of diplomats, researchers, and cultural professionals.
