A major wildfire near the Gros Bessillon massif in the Var department of France has burned a total of 6,350 hectares, including 1,850 hectares since the fire re‑ignited on 31 July. At its peak, more than 800 firefighters and 250 fire engines were engaged, and the operation later involved over 1,000 firefighters. The response includes three water‑bombing helicopters, a command helicopter, and a drone team locating hot spots.

The prefecture extended a ban on transporting fuel containers and gas canisters across the department until 8 August 08:00, and roads RD 22 and RD 554 have been closed to aid firefighting efforts. Authorities have opened investigations into 24 fire starts in the area, with six human‑caused ignitions recorded since 24 July. The prosecutor’s office said the hypothesis of intentional arson is being seriously considered.

Local officials warned of worsening conditions due to strong mistral winds, high temperatures and ongoing drought, prompting calls for caution and the possible cancellation of public fireworks displays.
