The post has been described by Ferris as insensitive, alleging the mayor is attempting to stoke community division.

The controversy stems from an ongoing debate regarding the hitching post statue, known as Jocko. Artist Osvaldo Budet has accused the mayor of being uncomfortable with the historical truths explored in an exhibition at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Despite the friction, Mayor Penfold has stated that the statue will remain.
