Maitland ranks 35th in 2026 Happy City Index

Maitland has been ranked 35th in the 2026 Happy City Index, making it one of only two Australian cities to appear in the global top 50, alongside Ballarat, which ranked 16th. The city also appeared at 112th on a list of the world's healthiest cities.

However, the announcement has coincided with local political tension. Mayor Philip Penfold faced criticism from Councillor Don Ferris after posting a computer-generated image of the High Street hitching post statue to celebrate the ranking. The post has been described by Ferris as insensitive, alleging the mayor is attempting to stoke community division.

The controversy stems from an ongoing debate regarding the hitching post statue, known as Jocko. Artist Osvaldo Budet has accused the mayor of being uncomfortable with the historical truths explored in an exhibition at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Despite the friction, Mayor Penfold has stated that the statue will remain.
