Maizuru City receives heritage designations for Yoshiwara and Red Brick Building
Maizuru City is celebrating significant cultural heritage milestones. The Council for Cultural Affairs has recommended the Yoshiwara District to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to be designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. This marks the first such designation within Maizuru City. The district, covering approximately 8.9 hectares, preserves the historical atmosphere of a fishing town, featuring 165 buildings and various structures dating from the end of the Edo period through the mid-Showa era.
In conjunction with local heritage efforts, Maizuru City will host a special public viewing of the Red Brick Building No. 6, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, on October 25, 2026. The event allows the public to observe the ongoing preservation and repair work, including seismic reinforcement and foundation construction, which is typically inaccessible to the general public.
