Maja Chwalińska reaches French Open final
Polish qualifier Maja Chwalińska, world No. 114, defeated Russia's Diana Shnaider 7‑6 (4), 6‑4 in the Roland Garros semifinals, becoming the first player from the qualifying draw in the Open Era to reach a French Open women's final. In the upcoming championship match she will meet 19‑year‑old Russian Mirra Andreeva, who advanced after a dominant 6‑1, 6‑3 win over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk.
Chwalińska’s run included eight straight victories in Paris, starting from the qualifiers and progressing through four top‑50 opponents. The achievement is expected to lift her WTA ranking into the top 20 and increase her career prize earnings from $864 000 to roughly €1.4 million for the finalist appearance. Her social‑media following also surged, adding over 140 000 Instagram followers in a few days.
Speaking after the semifinal, Chwalińska’s father Tomasz said the experience felt “like a beautiful dream,” while the Polish tennis federation highlighted the historic nature of the feat for Polish sport.
