Maja Chwalińska reaches Roland Garros final, earnings still far short of career costs
Polish teenager Maja Chwalińska surged from the qualifying rounds to the Roland Garros final, winning nine matches and climbing almost 100 places in the WTA rankings. For reaching the Grand Slam final she earned €1.4 million (about 6 million zł before tax); after taxes and expenses only roughly 3.25 million zł remains, far below the estimated 10 million zł she has spent on her career. Her manager Piotr Szczypka said that “Maja zapewniła sobie, moim zdaniem dwa‑trzy lata spokoju, gdzie ten ranking będzie w miarę wysoko…”, adding that she will need two more finals to break even.
Chwalińska’s next stops are Wimbledon, followed by tournaments in Jassy and Hamburg. Her run included a 6‑3 6‑2 victory over higher‑ranked Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the fourth round, a match that Parry later lost in Bad Homburg.
