Budapest appeal begins for German activist Maja T
The appeal process has begun in Budapest against Maja T., a non-binary activist from Jena, Germany. Previously sentenced to eight years in prison in February for physical attacks on alleged right-wing extremists in Hungary, the defendant is now facing a potential increase in punishment.
The Hungarian prosecution is requesting a sentence of more than 13 years and a transfer to a ‘Zuchthaus’ (penitentiary), which entails reduced freedom of movement and more difficult conditions for early release. Prosecutors argue that the initial court failed to recognize that the defendant may have willfully accepted the risk of life-threatening injuries to the victims.
The defense, represented by lawyer Sven Richwin, is pleading for acquittal. The defense has criticized procedural errors, arguing that the appeal functions more like a review of legal errors rather than a full re-examination of facts, noting that key witnesses have not been re-examined. They also challenge the clarity of video evidence used for identification. A final verdict is expected on September 30.
