Majelis Rakyat Papua discusses indigenous rights with British Embassy

The Majelis Rakyat Papua (MRP) met with Sam Perkins, the Political Counselor from the British Embassy, to discuss critical issues facing the Papua region. The discussions focused on three primary pillars: indigenous communities, women, and religion.

MRP Chairman Nerlince Wamuar emphasized the need for increased support for Papuan women, specifically regarding health, economic opportunities, and empowerment. He noted that the demographic situation of indigenous Papuans requires policies that provide greater protection and space for women.

Regarding indigenous rights, Wamuar stressed that indigenous communities must be actively involved in all development programs and policies on their land. He argued that while Papua possesses vast natural resources, the indigenous people—as the rightful owners of the land—should not be mere spectators in the development process. The MRP expressed hope that this visit would lead to tangible cooperation between the UK and Papua to support the empowerment of these groups.
