Majelis Ulama Indonesia issues guidelines for Independence Day celebrations

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued several advisories regarding the upcoming celebrations for Indonesia's Independence Day on August 17. KH Abdul Muiz Ali, Deputy Secretary of the MUI Fatwa Commission, emphasized that men dressing in women's clothing during carnivals or parades is considered haram (forbidden) under Islamic law. This guidance is intended to prevent the promotion of LGBTQ+ movements through cross-dressing in public spaces.

Additionally, the MUI provided guidance for community organizers and event committees. Organizers are urged to ensure that parade routes do not obstruct public road users. Regarding community competitions, the MUI stated that while holding contests is permissible, organizers must not use participant registration fees to fund prizes, as this practice is categorized as gambling (qimar), which is also prohibited in Islam.
