AI platforms ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok suffer simultaneous global outages

Major artificial intelligence platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok, experienced simultaneous service disruptions on Thursday, September 3. The outages affected millions of users globally, with significant reports emerging from the United States, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and several other countries.

OpenAI reported elevated error rates for ChatGPT and Codex, attributing the issue to a routing error that began around 7:43 am PT. The company implemented mitigation measures and monitored recovery shortly thereafter. Anthropic confirmed a partial outage affecting multiple Claude models, including Opus, Mythos, and Fable, noting that the cause had been identified and a fix deployed.

xAI reported outages across Grok’s web and mobile platforms. SpaceX, the parent company of xAI, stated that the Grok disruptions resulted from an outage at its Memphis compute center. Additionally, Google’s Gemini service saw reports of degradation and increased error rates during the same period. The AI coding tool Cursor also reported disruptions linked to these upstream service failures.
