Major Crime Investigation Agency faces recruitment divide between prosecutors and police

As the Major Crime Investigation Agency (MCIA) prepares for its October launch, a significant divide has emerged between the prosecution and police regarding personnel recruitment.

Employment briefings held across various regional prosecution offices have met with lukewarm responses from prosecutors. A primary concern among junior prosecutors with less than 10 years of experience is the potential for a demotion in rank; under the proposed structure, such individuals would transition from a rank equivalent to 3rd grade to a 4th grade investigator position. Furthermore, a limited number of high-ranking slots (only 30 for 3rd grade) raises concerns about a "promotion bottleneck."

In contrast, the police force shows increased interest. Younger police officers and senior officials nearing mandatory retirement ages view the MCIA as a viable career alternative. Some junior police officers perceive the transition to the MCIA's rank system as a functional promotion. However, experts note that the agency's ultimate composition depends heavily on whether enough prosecution personnel volunteer to fill the initial roles.
